Why did you become an attorney?

I solve problems.  Being an attorney is the perfect fit for my personality, personal strengths, and desire to find solutions to even the most complicated situations.  I fell in love with trying cases in the courtroom while I was in high school doing the mock trial program.  As a family law lawyer, I am in the courtroom 3-4 days a week.

What experiences (work and personal) help you to be a better attorney?

Spending hundreds of hours in the courtroom trying cases, questioning witnesses, and presenting evidence has made me an experienced trial lawyer.

Spending two years as a federal judicial law clerk for a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio has honed my ability to analyze cases from the court's perspective and argue convincingly, compassionately, and succinctly to the court.

Playing competitive sports since the age of 5 has taught me how to handle any competitive situation.

What made you choose your primary specialty focus of law?

Domestic relations/family law cases -- meaning divorce, child custody and visitation, division of marital property, child support, spousal support/alimony, and paternity actions -- generally require more courtroom work and more personal attention to clients than multi-million dollar business disputes and personal injury cases.  As a trial lawyer by trade, I recognize that clients involved in family law litigation have unique personal needs which require special attention.  I make every effort to resolve all of my cases amicably and expeditiously.  If a satisfactory resolution cannot be reached or if a party is unreasonable in their demands, I will gladly take the case to trial so it can be decided by the court.

Typical Retainer Fees

Every case is different.  There is no one-size-fits-all in this area of law.  The divorce or child custody action of a family member, friend, or acquaintence is likely different from your particular need.  Naturally, the more complicated the case and the more attorney time which it will take to work your case, the more expensive it will be.

Dissolution fees are easier to predict.  My firm requires a retainer of $1,200 for dissolutions without children and $1,500 for dissolutions with children.  My rate is billed hourly, and a retainer at these amounts is generally sufficient to cover the amount of legal fees for a dissolution where the parties have worked out all of the issues prior to the retention of counsel.

For contested divorce, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support/alimony, and paternity actions, my rate is billed hourly and a guarantor/co-signer is required.

I am fully aware of the costs of litigation and expense involved in litigating family law matters.  As such, I try to work with all of my clients on ways to appropriately manage the expenses at every step of the case.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

Every case is unique, so I cannot handle any matter for an upfront, one-time fixed fee.

Fees by Hourly Rate

Attorney's Hourly Rate:  $225/hour

Initial Consultation: $50

My clients are the final decision-makers as to the trajectory of their cases.  I counsel my clients as to the steps that I believe should be taken in every case, as well as the costs involved in each step.  The facts of their case and the decisions they make during the litigation make a major impact the amount of time involved in handling their matter.
